Guitar Setup Tools

Choose the tools you need to change strings

Check the tuner button, string type and bridge before buying a winder, cutter or bridge pin puller.

Choose the winder for the tuner button

A winder socket has to engage the button without slipping or pressing against neighboring tuners. Compare the maker's stated instrument fit and use the bass-specific version when the guitar socket does not fit.

Check the bridge and cutter separately

A pin puller is useful when the acoustic bridge uses removable pins. Pinless bridges and many electric bridges do not need one. Choose a cutter rated for the intended strings and follow the maker’s restringing instructions.

Plan the working surface

Read the rest height and contact material, and make sure the instrument sits steadily at the intended angle. A mat can define the work area, but a bundled rest has to fit the guitar independently.

Guide questions

Does every winder include a cutter?

Check the exact tool. Some combine both functions and others only turn the tuning button.

Do I need a bridge pin puller for an electric guitar?

Check the bridge design. The puller is for a bridge with removable pins.

Can I use the same winder for bass and guitar?

Compare the socket and tuner sizes. Some makers sell dedicated bass and guitar versions.

Which accessory suits the job?

  1. The Pro-Winder performs winding, cutting and pin pulling on a matching guitar. The mat and cradle support the guitar during those tasks and are useful if you need a separate work surface.

  2. Both Pro-Winders combine three functions. Choose the guitar or bass model by the winding head and the actual tuner button, then check the cutter and bridge fit independently.
