Choosing fret checking tools

Choose a local or full-span reference

A fret rocker checks a short group of frets. A long straightedge checks a longer span. Pick the reference that answers your question before buying or using a leveling tool.

Check scale-specific notches

A notched edge needs to clear the frets so it can read the board surface. Confirm the actual fret scale supported by each edge. A plain edge may have a different intended contact surface.

Department questions

What does rocking show?

It identifies a local change in contact. Check nearby positions and confirm the cause before removing material.

Should I choose a notched edge by brand name?

Check the documented scale lengths and compare the actual instrument.

Can I measure the fret tops through the notches?

Choose the edge designed to touch the reference surface you intend to measure.
