Choose a fret polish and fretboard guard
Check the fret width and board finish before choosing a guard, cloth, polishing compound or abrasive.
Distinguish polishing from leveling
Polishing tools address the fret surface. A product sold for leveling or crowning serves a different job. Inspect the condition and use only the process recommended for the fret material and finish.
Match the guard to the fret
Measure the exposed fret and compare the slots in the guard set. The right guard covers nearby surfaces while leaving the intended fret accessible. Follow the product instructions before placing metal or abrasive against the board.
Check support and cleanup together
A stable neck rest gives you room to work without holding the neck in one hand. Read the rest's contact material and the polish maker's cleanup instructions. Keep the tools away from finishes for which the maker gives no approval.
